FAFSA, OSAC deadlines

Students enrolling or continuing their education in the fall of 2013 must fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid known as FAFSA if they plan on using loans to pay for college. The application can be filled out online or by paper and mailed in.

The form will require students’ tax information in order to determine eligibility for a variety of student loan packages. The form may also need the tax information of the student’s parents if the student is claimed as dependent on his or her parents’ tax forms.

The schools then use this information to package the students’ aid. A student can list up to ten colleges on the application, meaning the information can be sent to multiple institutions.

The FAFSA form became available on January 1 and can be filled out at any time and corrected after it is sent in. The sooner students fill out their FAFSA, however, the sooner their college can package their reward.

The Oregon Student Access Commission (OSAC) scholarship application is due March 1. The OSAC scholarship application links several scholarships throughout Oregon into one application.

Students will need to provide their academic transcript, a list of activities and personal statements. Some scholarships will require a separate essay or letter of recommendation.  If students submit the application before February 15, they will also be eligible for the Early Bird Scholarship of $500.
